THE INTERTESTAMENTAL PERIOD

This 98th penultimate Post discusses the four hundred year period between Malachi and John the Baptist (the last prophet of the Old Testament), known as The Intertestamental Period.

Posts 82, 84, 86, and 88 covered the ancient history of this same period, but here we will discuss in greater detail events that affected the part of the world known as Judea (or Judæa): Israel, the Northern and Southern kingdoms, Palestine, and the Hasmonean empire, among other names.

Instead of the usual Book of Mormon quote, I offer you the following.

In October 2018 General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson invited us to read the Book of Mormon before the end of the year and "mark each verse that speaks of or refers to the Savior." I accepted this invitation. Here are my References to Christ in the Book of Mormon. I put these references into a spreadsheet. I can email it to you if you are interested. Just ask.

CHIASMS IN ZECHARIAH & MALACHI

This 97th Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 48, "The Great and Dreadful Day of the Lord".

This lesson includes material from Zechariah (chapters 10-14) and Malachi.

See my collections of Chiasms in Zechariah and Chiasms in Malachi.

"I testify that Joseph Smith was and is the prophet of this last dispensation. It was he who, through the gift and power of God, translated this holy book [The Book of Mormon]. This is the book that will help to prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord." (Russell M. Nelson, October 2017.)

ANCIENT TEXTS AND AUTHORS

This 96th Post contains my Introduction to my List of Ancient Texts and Authors.

Notice how there is virtually no true writing until long after Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden of Eden. People who looked like us, wore clothing, had fire, and used tools, had been around for at least 40 thousand years, but there was little innovation and no writing. See my Post People Before Adam and Eve, and my earlier post from my 2008 To Be Or Not To Be Blog.

I've collected books and online articles about the ancient texts for more then twenty-five years. About ten years ago I tried to summarize what I'd done in a series of Excel spreadsheets. I relied heavily on Wikipedia, which, in my opinion, is the best overall source of unbiased, factual information on the internet.

I had problems with the hyperlinks when I sorted the spreadsheets, so I never finished the project.

Now, ten years later, I've just revised the spreadsheet for the period down to 1 BC. I've checked the links and added some new material, but like almost everything I do, this is a work in progress.

"The Book of Mormon makes the solemn declaration that Jesus is the Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. . . . When you read the Book of Mormon, concentrate on the principal figure in the book - from its first chapter to the last - the Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God." (Russell M. Nelson.)

CHIASMS IN THE QUR'AN

This 95th Post shows some examples of Chiasms in the Qur'an.

The Qur'an wasn't written until after AD 600, so it is not part of the Old Testament.

Read the Qur'an. It might help you understand Islam, the source of so much conflict in today's world.

I've collected over twenty English translations of the Qur'an, and I've read it several times. Here is the Al Hilali & Khan translation.

"The Book of Mormon both illuminates the teachings of the Master and exposes the tactics of the adversary. The Book of Mormon teaches true doctrine to dispel false religious traditions—such as the erroneous practice of performing infant baptisms. The Book of Mormon gives purpose to life by urging us to ponder the potential of eternal life and “never-ending happiness.” The Book of Mormon shatters the false beliefs that happiness can be found in wickedness and that individual goodness is all that is required to return to the presence of God. It abolishes forever the false concepts that revelation ended with the Bible and that the heavens are sealed today." (Russell M. Nelson, October 2017.)

CHIASMS IN EZRA, NEHEMIAH, & HAGGAI

This 94th Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 47, "Let Us Rise Up and Build".

Material from Ezra and Nehemiah is included in this lesson. Haggai is not included in the Gospel Doctrine lessons.

In about 457 BC, Ezra was sent to Jerusalem by king Artaxerxes to teach the laws of God. In about 445 BC, Nehemiah and Haggai were sent to tell the Jews to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and the Temple. (Some sources place Haggai nearly a hundred years earlier.)

See my collections of Chiasms in Ezra, Chiasms in Nehemiah, and Chiasms in Haggai.

"I promise that as you prayerfully study the Book of Mormon every day, you will make better decisions - every day. I promise that as you ponder what you study, the windows of heaven will open, and you will receive answers to your own questions and direction for your own life. I promise that as you daily immerse yourself in the Book of Mormon, you can be immunized against the evils of the day, even the gripping plague of pornography and other mind-numbing addictions." (Russell M. Nelson.)

CHIASMS IN GENESIS

This is my 93rd Post. Some of the Chiasms in Genesis were included in the first twenty Posts, but the book has an even greater wealth of chiastic content. I've divided it into four parts.

In the Beginning - Genesis 1-10.
The Life of Abraham - Genesis 11-25.
The Life of Jacob - Genesis 25-36.
The Life of Joseph - Genesis 36-50.

The Book of Mormon also has an amazing collection of Hebrew Poems.

OTHER BOOKS

This 92nd Post covers five Old Testament books that are not included in any of the Gospel Doctrine Lessons. Here they are in the order found in the KJV Bible.

Song of Solomon and Chiasms in Song of Solomon.
Obadiah and Chiasms in Obadiah.
Nahum and Chiasms in Nahum.
Habakkuk and Chiasms in Habakkuk.
Zephaniah and Chiasms in Zephaniah.

Russell M. Nelson: "Study of the Book of Mormon is most rewarding when one focuses on its primary purpose—to testify of Jesus Christ." The Book of Mormon is the "only book that the Lord Himself has testified to be true, . . . It will bring you closer to the Lord and His loving power, . . . [The Lord] has promised that those who live by the precepts of this book ‘shall receive a crown of eternal life.’"

CHIASMS IN DANIEL II

This 91st Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 46, "A Kingdom, Which Shall Never Be Destroyed".

This lesson includes material from Daniel 2.

See my collection of Chiasms in Daniel. This is used in Posts #89 and #91.

"The Lord provided a guide--a spiritual road map--to help us achieve success in our journey. We call that guide the standard works, so named because they--the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price--constitute the standard by which we should live. They serve as a standard of reference, as are standards of time, weights, and measures that are kept in national bureaus of standards" (Russell M. Nelson, "Living by Scriptural Guidance," Ensign, Nov. 2000, 17).

BIBLIOGRAPHY

This 90th post is a Bibliography of the sources of my collection of chiastic materials.

This list is almost entirely made up of articles I gathered thirty years ago. Some of the authors no longer have a web presence. I've tried to find links to as many of them as possible. I'm certain many new investigators have material online that isn't in my collection. I've included links to a couple of other bibliographies that I found while I was compiling my list.

Today I like to document everything, but thirty years ago I was just interested in finding new chiasms, and for the most part I didn't record who discovered and diagrammed each one. Chiasmus Exchange, by Stephen Palmer, and Bible Literary Structure, by Hajime Murai, two of my main sources, mostly don't say where they got their material either. Nos autem culpant.

“The normal way of dealing with the Book of Mormon ‘scientifically’ has been first to attribute to the Book of Mormon something it did not say, and then to refute the claim by scientific statements that have not been proven” (Hugh Nibley, "Since Cumorah," 2nd ed. [Provo: FARMS, 1981], 214.).

CHIASMS IN DANIEL I & ESTHER

This 89th Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 45, "If I Perish, I Perish".

This lesson includes material from Daniel 1, Daniel 3, Daniel 6, Esther 3-5, and Esther 7-8.

See my collections of Chiasms in Daniel, and Chiasms in Esther.

“Moroni did not promise a manifestation of the Holy Ghost to those who seek to know the truth of the Book of Mormon for hypothetical or academic reasons, even if they ‘ask with a sincere heart.’ The promise of Moroni is for those who are committed in their hearts to act upon the manifestation if it is received. Prayers based on any other reason have no promise because they are not made ‘with real intent’” (Dallin H. Oaks, Pure in Heart [1988], 19–20).

100 TO 1 BC

This 88th post is an outline of information about the period from 100 to 1 BC.

These Outlines of History are just that: Outlines. They contain links to additional information. Each one is a work in progress and none is as complete or as well organized as I would have liked. I hope you enjoy them anyway.

"If you are struggling, confused, or spiritually lost, I urge you to do the one thing I know will get you back on track. Begin again to prayerfully study the Book of Mormon and live its teachings every day, every day, every day! I testify of the profound power in the Book of Mormon that will change your life and strengthen your resolve to follow Christ. The Holy Ghost will change your heart and help you see “things as they really are.” He will show you what you need to do next" (Kevin W. Pearson, General Conference, April 2015).

CHIASMS IN EZEKIEL II

This 87th Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson #44, "Every Thing Shall Live Whither the River Cometh".

This lesson includes material from Ezekiel 43, Ezekiel 44, and Ezekiel 47.

See my collection of Chiasms in Ezekiel. This collection is used for Posts 85 and 87.

"The coming forth of the Book of Mormon is a sign to the entire world that the Lord has commenced to gather Israel and fulfill those covenants that He made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We not only teach that concept, but we get to participate. We do so as we help to gather the elect of the Lord on both sides of the veil" (Russell M. Nelson, New Mission Presidents Seminar, June 2012).

200 TO 100 BC

This 86th post is an outline of information about the period from 200 to 100 BC.

These Outlines of History are just that: Outlines. They contain links to additional information. Each one is a work in progress and none is as complete or as well organized as I would have liked. I hope you enjoy them anyway.

"The Book of Mormon contains the fulness of the gospel. It teaches of the Atonement of the Lord. Without the Book of Mormon, we would know very little about the Atonement. Because of our understanding of the Atonement, the Book of Mormon helps us to repent, to make and keep sacred covenants, and to merit the ordinances of salvation and exaltation. The Book of Mormon leads us to the temple and to qualify for eternal life" (Russell M. Nelson, New Mission Presidents Seminar, June 2012).

CHIASMS IN EZEKIEL I

This 85th Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson #43, The Shepherds of Israel.

This lesson includes material from Ezekiel 18, Ezekiel 34, and Ezekiel 37.

See my collection of Chiasms in Ezekiel. This collection is used for Posts 85 and 87.

"[T]he Book of Mormon is central to this work. It declares the doctrine of the gathering. It causes people to learn about Jesus Christ, to believe His gospel, and to join His Church. In fact, if there were no Book of Mormon, the promised gathering of Israel would not occur" (Russell M. Nelson, Conference Report, Oct. 2006, 84; or Ensign, Nov. 2006, 80).

300 TO 200 BC

These Outlines of History are just that: Outlines. They contain links to additional information. Each one is a work in progress and none is as complete or as well organized as I would have liked. I hope you enjoy them anyway.

"We need to feel deep in 'the inmost part' of our hearts, that the Book of Mormon is unequivocally the word of God. We must feel it so deeply that we would never want to live even one day without it." Russell M. Nelson.

CHIASMS IN JEREMIAH II

This 83rd Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 42, "I Will Write it in Their Hearts".

This lesson includes material from Jeremiah 16, Jeremiah 23, Jeremiah 29, and Jeremiah 31. Also see the Additional Reading section of the lesson.

See my collection of Chiasms in Jeremiah. This collection is used for Posts 81 and 83.

"The Bible often initiates and helps to sustain faith in Jesus, but the Book of Mormon is the convincer and the clarifier" (Neal A. Maxwell, BYU Devotional, November 1977).

400 TO 300 BC

This 82nd post is an outline of information about the period from 400 to 300 BC.

These Outlines of History are just that: Outlines. They contain links to additional information. Each one is a work in progress and none is as complete or as well organized as I would have liked. I hope you enjoy them anyway.

"The Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants testify of each other. You cannot believe one and not the other. . . . "The Doctrine and Covenants is the binding link between the Book of Mormon and the continuing work of the Restoration through the Prophet Joseph Smith and his successors. . . . "The Book of Mormon brings men to Christ. The Doctrine and Covenants brings men to Christ’s kingdom, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 'the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth' [D&C 1:30]. I know that. "The Book of Mormon is the 'keystone' of our religion, and the Doctrine and Covenants is the capstone, with continuing latter-day revelation. The Lord has placed His stamp of approval on both the keystone and the capstone" (Ezra Taft Benson, "The Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants,” Ensign, May 1987, 83).

CHIASMS IN JEREMIAH I & LAMENTATIONS

This 81st Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 41, "I Have Made Thee This Day ... an Iron Pillar".

This lesson includes material from Jeremiah 1-2, Jeremiah 15, Jeremiah 20, Jeremiah 26, and Jeremiah 36-38.

See my collection of Chiasms in Jeremiah. This collection is used for Posts 81 and 83.

Lamentations is not covered in a Gospel Doctrine lesson, but is traditionally attributed to Jeremiah, although experts today doubt he wrote the book. See my collection of Chiasms in Lamentations.

"It is not just that the Book of Mormon teaches us truth, though it indeed does that. It is not just that the Book of Mormon bears testimony of Christ, though it indeed does that, too. But there is something more. There is a power in the book which will begin to flow into your lives the moment you begin a serious study of the book. You will find greater power to resist temptation. You will find the power to avoid deception. You will find the power to stay on the strait and narrow path . . . and nowhere is that more true than it is of the Book of Mormon. When you begin to hunger and thirst after those words, you will find life in greater and greater abundance" (Ezra Taft Benson, October 1986 General Conference).

500 TO 400 BC

This 80th post is an outline of information about the period from 500 to 400 BC.

These Outlines of History are just that: Outlines. They contain links to additional information. Each one is a work in progress and none is as complete or as well organized as I would have liked. I hope you enjoy them anyway.

"Neither the Bible nor the Book of Mormon in and of themselves is sufficient. Both are necessary for us to teach and learn about the full and complete doctrine of Christ. The need for the other does not diminish either one of them. Both the Bible and the Book of Mormon are necessary for our salvation and exaltation. As President Ezra Taft Benson so powerfully taught, 'When used together, the Bible and the Book of Mormon confound false doctrines'"(L. Tom Perry, "The Power of Deliverance", General Conference, Apr. 2012).

CHIASMS IN ISAIAH V

This 79th Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 40, "Enlarge the Place of Thy Tent".

This lesson includes material from Isaiah 54-56, and Isaiah 63-65.

See my collection of Chiasms in Isaiah. This collection is used for Posts 70, 73, 75, 77, and 79.

I've gone back through the Book of Mormon from the beginning all the way to the end of Mosiah, updating all the "prepositional phrases". See the revised version of References to Christ in the Book of Mormon. I've already processed the first seventeen chapters of Alma. I'm ten days ahead of schedule. This has been a very interesting experience. I recommend it for YOU!

600 TO 500 BC

This 78th post is an outline of information about the period from 600 to 500 BC.

These Outlines of History are just that: Outlines. They contain links to additional information. Each one is a work in progress and none is as complete or as well organized as I would have liked. I hope you enjoy them anyway.

About the Book of Mormon: "For 179 years this book has been examined and attacked, denied and deconstructed, targeted and torn apart like perhaps no other book in modern religious history—perhaps like no other book in any religious history. And still it stands. Failed theories about its origins have been born and parroted and have died... None of these frankly pathetic answers for this book has ever withstood examination because there is no other answer than the one Joseph gave as its young unlearned translator. In this I stand with my own great-grandfather, who said simply enough, “No wicked man could write such a book as this; and no good man would write it, unless it were true and he were commanded of God to do so" (George Cannon, quoted in “The Twelve Apostles,” in Andrew Jenson, ed., The Historical Record, 6:175.)" (Jeffrey R. Holland, General Conference, October 2009).

CHIASMS IN ISAIAH IV

This 77th Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 39, "How Beautiful upon the Mountains".

This lesson includes material from Isaiah 50-53.

See my collection of Chiasms in Isaiah. This collection is used for Posts 70, 73, 75, 77, and 79.

I've completed Mosiah in my References to Christ in the Book of Mormon project. Take a look. Since then I've gone back to the beginning to revisit all the "prepositional phrases". I hope to have that done by next Sunday. Stay tuned. This has been a very interesting experience. I recommend it for everyone!

"Each time we encourage others to read the Book of Mormon, we do them a favor. If they read it prayerfully and with a sincere desire to know the truth, they will know by the power of the Holy Ghost that the book is true.

"From that knowledge there will flow a conviction of the truth of many other things. For if the Book of Mormon is true, then God lives. Testimony upon testimony runs through its pages of the solemn fact that our Father is real, that he is personal, that he loves his children and seeks their happiness." (Gordon B. Hinckley, "The Power of the Book of Mormon," Ensign, June 1988)

These Outlines of History are just that: Outlines. They contain links to additional information. Each one is a work in progress and none is as complete or as well organized as I would have liked. I hope you enjoy them anyway.

On the Book of Mormon: "No other written testament so clearly illustrates the fact that when men and nations walk in the fear of God and in obedience to his commandments, they prosper and grow, but when they disregard him and his word, there comes a decay that, unless arrested by righteousness, leads to impotence and death" (Gordon B. Hinckley, Conference Report, Oct. 1979, 10; or Ensign, Nov. 1979, 8).

CHIASMS IN ISAIAH III

This 75th Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 38, "Beside Me There Is No Saviour". Notice how this lesson focuses on what Isaiah teaches about Jesus Christ. This fits in well with my Book of Mormon quote for today, below.

This lesson includes material from Isaiah 40-49.

See my collection of Chiasms in Isaiah. This collection is used for Posts 70, 73, 75, 77, and 79.

I've completed 2 Nephi in my References to Christ in the Book of Mormon project. Take a look. I've since done Jacob, Enos, Jaron, Omni, Words of Mormon, and I'm half a dozen chapters into Mosiah. This has been a very interesting experience. I recommend it for everyone!

"Much of the Christian world today rejects the divinity of the Savior. They question His miraculous birth, His perfect life, and the reality of His glorious resurrection. The Book of Mormon teaches in plain and unmistakable terms about the truth of all of those. It also provides the most complete explanation of the doctrine of the Atonement. Truly this divinely inspired book is a keystone in bearing witness to the world that Jesus is the Christ" (Ezra Taft Benson).

800 TO 700 BC

This 74th post is an outline of information about the period from 800 to 700 BC.

These Outlines of History are just that: Outlines. They contain links to additional information. Each one is a work in progress and none is as complete or as well organized as I would have liked. I hope you enjoy them anyway.

M. Russell Ballard, Ensign, Nov. 2004, 40 - "Our testimony meetings need to be more centered on the Savior, the doctrines of the gospel, the blessings of the Restoration, and the teachings of the scriptures. We need to replace stories, travelogues, and lectures with pure testimonies. . . . Although we can have testimonies of many things as members of the Church, there are basic truths we need to constantly teach one another and share with those not of our faith. Testify God is our Father and Jesus is the Christ. The plan of salvation is centered on the Savior’s Atonement. Joseph Smith restored the fulness of the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ, and the Book of Mormon is evidence that our testimony is true."

CHIASMS IN ISAIAH II

This 73rd Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 37, "Thou Hast Done Wonderful Things". Notice how this lesson focuses on what Isaiah teaches about Jesus Christ. This fits in well with my Book of Mormon quote for today, below.

This lesson includes material from Isaiah 22, Isaiah 24-26, and Isaiah 28-30.

See my collection of Chiasms in Isaiah.

This collection is used for Posts 70, 73, 75, 77, and 79.

This past weekend, in Conference, President Russell M. Nelson invited the women of the Church, "to read the Book of Mormon between now and the end of the year. As impossible as that may seem with all you are trying to manage in your life, if you will accept this invitation with full purpose of heart, the Lord will help you find a way to achieve it. And, as you prayerfully study, I promise that the heavens will open for you. The Lord will bless you with increased inspiration and revelation.

"As you read, I would encourage you to mark each verse that speaks of or refers to the Savior. Then, be intentional about talking of Christ, rejoicing in Christ, and preaching of Christ with your families and friends. You and they will be drawn closer to the Savior through this process. And changes, even miracles, will begin to happen."

I've decided I could benefit from this experience. I've uploaded References to Christ in the Book of Mormon, and you can check back from time to time to see the progress I'm making.

ISAIAH CHIASMS IN THE BOOK OF MORMON

This 72nd Post shows three "Isaiah" chiasms in the Book of Mormon.

Isaiah was arguably the greatest prophet of the Old Testament. Lehi and Nephi lived about as long after the time of Isaiah as we live after the time of Joseph Smith. The way we feel about Joseph Smith was matched by the way Nephi felt about Isaiah. Nephi quoted Isaiah extensively, as I showed in Post #68. If you look at the footnotes in the Book of Mormon, you'll see that Isaiah fades from the Nephite record as time goes on, replaced by the great Nephite prophets.

See my article about the Isaiah Chiasms in the Book of Mormon.

"Reading and pondering the Book of Mormon and other scriptures brings spiritual-mindedness. The Lord has instructed: "Let the solemnities of eternity rest upon your mind" (DC 43:34), and "treasure up in your minds continually the words of life" (DC 84:85). (Ezra Taft Benson "Lord, Increase Our Faith," Provo Utah Tabernacle Rededication, 21 September 1986.)

900 TO 800 BC

This 71st post is an outline of information about the period from 900 to 800 BC.

"[The power of the Holy Ghost] must ever be the chief source of evidence for the truth of the Book of Mormon. All other evidence is secondary to this, the primary and infallible. No arrangement of evidence, however skillfully ordered; no argument, however adroitly made, can ever take its place" (B. H. Roberts, New Witnesses for God, 3 vols. (Salt Lake City: Deseret News, 1909–11), 2:vi–viii).

CHIASMS IN ISAIAH

This 70th Post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 36, The Glory of Zion Will Be a Defense.

This lesson includes material from Isaiah 1-6. Compare 2 Nephi 12-16.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government
shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,
The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6.

See my collection of Chiasms in Isaiah. This collection is also used for Posts 73, 75, 77, and 79.

"I feel certain that if, in our homes, parents will read from the Book of Mormon prayerfully and regularly, both by themselves and with their children the spirit of that great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein. The spirit of reverence will increase, mutual respect and consideration for each other will grow. The spirit of contention will depart. Parents will counsel their children in greater love and wisdom. Children will be more responsive and submissive to that counsel. Righteousness will increase. Faith, hope, and charity—the pure love of Christ—will abound in our homes and lives, bringing in their wake peace, joy, and happiness" (Elder Marion G. Romney, Conference Report, April 1960, Afternoon Meeting 112 - 113).

"I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book" (Joseph Smith, HC 4:461).

I apologize for the poor quality of the two images above. I created them more than thirty years ago and no longer have the original Excel spreadsheet they came from. Even worse, I'm too lazy to try to create them from scratch. If you open them in separate windows you should be able to read them. My bad. Mea culpa. And all that.

"I want to address myself to the men holding the priesthood, particularly, and to their wives and to all other members of the Church. No member of this Church can stand approved in the presence of God who has not seriously and carefully read the Book of Mormon, and I think I could add to that also, as far as our brethren are concerned, the Doctrine and Covenants... It seems to me that a member of this Church would not be able to rest in peace and comfort and have a clear conscience without having knowledge by study and by faith of the standard works of the Church. These records are priceless. The world mocks at them, but through their teachings we are permitted to come nearer unto God, get a better understanding of our Heavenly Father and his Son Jesus Christ, become closer acquainted with them and to know more in regard to the wonderful plan of salvation which they have given unto us and unto the world if it will receive the plan that will exalt us in the kingdom of God to become his sons and his daughters, receiving the fulness of that kingdom." (President Joseph Fielding Smith, Conference Report, October 1961, Afternoon Meeting, 18-19).

CHIASMS IN JOEL AND AMOS

This post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 35, God Reveals His Secrets to His Prophets.

I found and corrected several gross errors in my source material as I compiled the chiasms in Joel. I probably didn't catch all of them.

See my collections of Chiasms in Joel and Chiasms in Amos.

"I speak about the power of the Book of Mormon and the critical need we have as members of this Church to study, ponder, and apply its teachings in our lives. As we do so, we will be in a position to hear the voice of the Spirit, to resist temptation, to overcome doubt and fear, and to receive heaven's help in our lives." Thomas S. Monson.

"A powerful testimony to the importance of the Book of Mormon is to note where the Lord placed its coming forth in the timetable of the unfolding Restoration. The only thing that preceded it was the First Vision. In that marvelous manifestation, the Prophet Joseph Smith learned the true nature of God and that God had a work for him to do. The coming forth of the Book of Mormon was the next thing to follow. Think of that in terms of what it implies. The coming forth of the Book of Mormon preceded the restoration of the priesthood. It was published just a few days before the Church was organized. The Saints were given the Book of Mormon to read before they were given the revelations outlining such great doctrines as the three degrees of glory, celestial marriage, or work for the dead. It came before priesthood quorums and Church organization. Doesn't this tell us something about how the Lord views this sacred work?" (Ezra Taft Benson, CR October 1986, Ensign 16:4 [November 1986].)

"The time has come for us to capitalize more effectively on the potent combination of the mighty change of heart, made possible primarily by the spiritual power of the Book of Mormon, and the turning of hearts to the fathers, accomplished through the spirit of Elijah. A yearning for connection to our past can prepare an individual to receive the virtue of the word of God and fortify his or her faith. A heart turning to the fathers uniquely helps an individual withstand the influence of the adversary and strengthen conversion." (David A. Bednar, 2013 Seminar for New Mission Presidents, June 2013)

This post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 29, "He Took Up . . . the Mantle of Elijah".

This lesson includes material from II Kings 2, 5, and 6.

2 Kings 2:11-13. "And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him,"

See my article, Chiasms in II Kings.

"From the Book of Mormon we learn how disciples of Christ live in times of war. From the Book of Mormon we see the evils of secret combinations portrayed in graphic and chilling reality. In the Book of Mormon we find lessons for dealing with persecution and apostasy. We learn much about how to do missionary work. And more than anywhere else, we see in the Book of Mormon the dangers of materialism and setting our hearts on the things of the world. Can anyone doubt that this book was meant for us and that in it we find great power, great comfort, and great protection?" Ezra Taft Benson

HARMONY OF S-K-C III

This is the third of eight parts of my Harmony of the material in 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, and parts of Isaiah and Jeremiah: Harmony of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles Part III.

These thirty pages contain parts of 1 Kings (chapters 1-7), 2 Samuel (chapter 23), 1 Chronicles (chapters 22-29), and 2 Chronicles (chapters 1-3).

One thing you'll have noticed is that there are long stretches where the narrative exists in only one of the two sources. It is safe to say that a LOT of material has been lost. It is probable that parts of the original writing have been removed from BOTH versions.

Another thing to notice is that there are never more than two side-by-side versions of the narrative. Compare that to the four parallel versions of the Gospels.

Finally, the book I chose to put on the left determined the order of things on the right. I chose Samuel before Kings, and Kings before Chronicles, because that's their order in our KJV Old Testament. If I'd put Chronicles on the left, the narrative might be in a slightly different chronological order.

"Ten or fifteen minutes a day with the scriptures, and particularly with the Book of Mormon, can give you marvelous understanding of the great eternal truths which have been preserved by the power of the Almighty for the blessing of His children. As you read of the life and teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ, you will draw closer to Him who is the author of our salvation." Gordon B. Hinckley.

Map from the April 2018 National Geographic Magazine.

"There is a power in the Book of Mormon which will begin to flow into your lives the moment you begin a serious study of the book. You will find greater power to resist temptation. You will find the power to avoid deception. You will find the power to stay on the straight and narrow path." Ezra Taft Benson.

CHIASMS IN PSALMS

This post accompanies Gospel Doctrine lesson 25, "Let Every Thing That Hath Breath Praise the Lord".

Lesson 25 is about some Prophecies of Christ found in Psalms. The Scriptures also contain Types of Christ, which was the subject of my June 3 Post to this blog.

Robert Alden wrote three articles about the chiasms in Psalms. You can find them at Monergism, or read them on Google Drive: Psalms 1-50, Psalms 51-100, and Psalms 101-150.

I spent many hours trying to compile my own article with the chiasms in Psalms. One of my main sources made the headers to the Psalms verse 1, and then verse 1 became verse 2, and so on. I gave up trying to renumber all this material to match what's in the Bible. Another frustration was that some sources use the KJV text and some use text from one of the "modern" translations. All my compilations suffer from that problem.

A footnote on page 191 in Alden's second article explains that some translations of the Hebrew Bible consider the titles of the Psalms to be the first verses. Although that sounds like a good explanation, I looked at several Hebrew Bibles online, and none of them did that. It is often hard to find the "true facts" about anything.

"I testify that one cannot come to full faith in this latter-day work until he or she embraces the divinity of the Book of Mormon and the Lord Jesus Christ, of whom it testifies." Jeffrey R. Holland.

PEOPLE BEFORE ADAM AND EVE

In this 39th post I'm introducing a topic that may upset some of you. There is undeniable evidence from many different scientific disciplines that man has been on this planet for several tens of thousands of years. They looked like us, wore clothing, used fire, had language, culture, and religion, and displayed all the other trappings of modern men. They lived here long before Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden of Eden.

During the rest of the year I'll be publishing articles I've compiled about the various time periods recognized by modern archaeology, paleontology, and other sciences, such as Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, and so on.

I'll introduce this topic with an article I published in another blog I had in 2008, Darwinism: People Before Adam and Eve".

2 Samuel 11:14-15

A few days ago I finished reading the English Book of Mormon and started the Spanish version while listening to the audio files. In 1 Nephi 1 I discovered some discrepancies between the text and the audio. There were additional or missing words and phrases. I even found a grammatical error! I started making a list of my discoveries. I sent several inquiries to LDS.org. No reply yet.

These thirty pages contain parts of 1 Samuel (chapter 31), 2 Samuel (chapters 1-12), and 1 Chronicles (chapter 3, and 10-20).

There are several places in the Scriptures where you can find multiple accounts of the same events.

For example, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are versions of the stories of Jesus written by different men. In my second post, How I Got Started, I showed a page from a Gospel Harmony I made in Spanish on my mission in Uruguay. People have been trying to "harmonize" the four Gospels ever since the 2nd century AD. You can see an LDS version in your LDS King James Bible or online at Harmony of the Gospels. There are MANY different versions online.

In my 4th and 6th posts I presented my own Harmonies of The Creation of the Earth and The Fall of Adam and Eve.

Most harmonies attempt to put the events written by different writers in chronological order. In 1996 I put together a harmony of Omni, Words, and Mosiah in the Book of Mormon to keep track of where events were taking place as people moved around from the Land of Nephi, to the Land of Zarahemla, to the Land of Helam, and in the Wilderness. Read A Guide to Omni Through Mosiah.

When we get to Isaiah later on this year, I'll show you a harmony I created of the parts of Isaiah that are in the Book of Mormon. That will be in October. Gospel Doctrine lessons 36 to 40 teach some of the ideas in Isaiah.

I try to read the Book of Mormon every year. I'm lazy and didn't get started this year until January 30. There are 239 chapters. My goal was to read at least a chapter a day. I finished yesterday. This has done me a lot of good. You'd benefit from doing it yourself. I've started listening to the Book of Mormon in Spanish.

One of my projects, which unfortunately can't be presented in this blog, is a harmony of the original 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon alongside the 1985 Book of Mormon. I have photos of every page of the 1830 edition together with side-by-side text. I'd be thrilled to give you the whole thing on a DVD if you are interested. (Oh, I crack myself up sometimes!)
